Modo Yoga NYC (Now called Fyra Yoga)

In 2023, Loryn Wilson Carter was the DEI strategist and facilitator for Modo Yoga NYC, now named Fyra Yoga. A yoga studio with locations in Brooklyn and the West Village,  Modo Yoga NYC’s leadership had a desire to implement more inclusive strategies in their class offerings and their staffing capacity, but needed a roadmap for reaching their goals.

The Challenge

Modo Yoga approached Jefferson Park Consulting with a common set of problems: a lack of diverse teachers and decision-makers. Additionally, they lacked inclusive class offerings and programs to diversify their audience. More often than not, instances of bias or discrimination were coming not from the leadership or the staff, but from the mostly white and wealthy customer base.

The Solution: Creating a Roadmap for an Inclusive Culture

Loryn Wilson Carter created a two-day workshop on building inclusive cultures. This workshop was done both in-person and online for those who could not attend the in-person workshop. We covered white supremacy culture, defined what DEI stands for and what these words mean, unpacked microaggressions, and learned about building psychological safety. Lastly, we began brainstorming to create a more inclusive environment and draw a more diverse audience to Modo Yoga NYC.

A key recommendation was introducing Modo Yoga NYC to the wider community through inclusive programming, such as Black-led and centered yoga classes and programs, which would be offered throughout the year, including during Black History Month and Women’s History Month. An additional recommendation was creating partnerships with Black- and POC-owned companies and organizations based in the neighborhoods with the closest proximity to Modo Yoga NYC Locations.

The Outcome: New Offerings and Partnerships

Modo Yoga NYC took these recommendations to heart and began to implement changes. In addition to rebranding to Fyra Yoga, they shifted the leadership structure, providing classes that centered Black women throughout the year, and hired a more diverse team of teachers, which led to a more inclusive workplace and created a business model that was integrated into the community around them. Additionally, they used social media to market their new offerings and expand their audience, creating more potential for new yoga enthusiasts from all walks of life to join their practice.
